LIGHTING THE CITY: GRAFFITI DE LEDS Y LUZ

 Todos sabemos del graffiti y hemos escuchado hablar del reconocimiento que ha tenido últimamente, ya no sólo como una actividad “callejera”, sino como arte. Las paredes de casas y edificios ahora hablan de algo más que solo rayones para marcar territorio, y que a muchos siguen sin hacerles sentido y han migrado de los exteriores a los interiores, de ser casi un acto de vandalismo a convertirse en una clase de muralismo en aerosol e incluso en un performance, llegando a ser los mismos propietarios, quienes permitan que estos artistas usen sus inmuebles como lienzo.

Ahora bien, si la forma de ver al graffiti ha cambiado ¿Porqué no cambiar el medio que se usa para hacerlo? En el último par de años, surgió una nueva forma de hacer graffiti a partir de una tecnología que ya existía desde hace mucho tiempo, y que a pesar de ser más costosa que el aerosol, es relativamente más perdurable: el LED (light-emitting diode). Y otra forma, un tanto más efímera pero igual de innovadora en su uso: el láser.

Esta nueva forma de hacer graffiti, se está practicando en distintas partes del mundo y se presume que surgió con un grupo de arte dedicado a implementar y modificar tecnologías para comunicación urbana (LED, láser, proyección,  intervención de mobiliario urbano, etc.). Debido al uso de ésta tecnología, al graffiti se le ha dado una nueva perspectiva. Sí, utilizándolo como un medio de expresión, como desde sus inicios, con una protesta fundamentada, pero haciéndolo totalmente disruptivo en relación al graffiti tradicional que probablemente ya  no haga diferencia en nuestro campo visual urbano tan saturado.

El graffti de LED’s se puede hacer de varias formas, preparando previamente el espacio que se utilizará con pintura magnética en el caso de que se quiera establecer un circuito o serie antes de pintar y colocar los LED’s o simplemente armando cada LED de forma independiente o en serie con una batería y un imán para fijarlo a superficies metálicas, como puentes, postes y estructuras de edificios. Debido a que es más “estético”, es más difícil que sean removidos o borrados, por lo menos no de inmediato.

  

En el caso del graffiti con láser pasa lo contrario, es una intervención más allá del uso de la tecnología como tal ya qué distancia se puede manipular, se trata de encontrar el edificio, monumento o estructura icónica e ideal para que el mensaje trascienda por el hecho de haber estado ahí aunque sólo sea por segundos y de  cuánta gente está expuesta a ese mensaje.

We all know  about graffiti and had listened about the rocognition that it had lately, not as a “street” activity already, but as art. The houses and building’s walls now talk about something else than just scketches to mark territory that still being non sense for a lot of people and that have migrated from the outside to the inside, of being almost an act of vandalism to turn in to  a kind of a spray muralism, even a performance, achieving that the owners themselves allow those artist use their properties as a canvas.

Now, if the way of perceive the graffiti has changed, why do not change the vehicles used to do it? In the last couple of years, came up a new way to do graffiti from a technology that already existed long time ago, and despite of being more expensive than spray, is quite more enduring: the LED (light-emitting diode). And another way, somewhat more ephemeral but just as innovative in its use: the laser. 

This new way of doing graffiti, is being practiced all over the world and it is presume that arose with an art group didicated to implement and modify urban communication technologies (LED, laser, pojection, intervention urban furnishing, etc.) Due to the use of this technology, has given a new perspective to graffiti. Yes, using it as a means of expression, as in its beginnings, with a based proposal, but making it totally disruptive related to traditional graffiti that probably don’t cause any difference in our so saturated urban visual field. 

The LED graffiti could be done in different ways, previously preparing the space with magnetic paint in case that a circuit or series is required before painting and place the LED’s, or just fitting out the LED as an independent or in series with a battery and a magnet to fix it on metalic surfaces, like bridges, poles and building structures. Because it is more “aesthetic”, it’s more difficult to remove them or erased, at least not immediately. 

In the case of laser graffiti the opposite happens, is an intervention beyond the use of such technology and how far it could be manipulated, its about finding the building, monument or iconic  and ideal structure so the message trascends by the fact of being there at least for a few seconds an how many people are exposed to the message.

Besides the use with artistic purposes that is given to the LED, it’s important to mention that more and more developed countries are using it to replace the traicional light bulb to  save energy and money in long term, as it is the case of Canada and its CN Tower that uses leds at night.
